A এবং An এর ব্যবহার উচ্চারণের উপর নির্ভর করে। কোন শব্দ উচ্চারণের শুরুতে যদি Vowel sound (A, E ,I ,O ,U) আসে তাহলে An বসে এবং Consonant sound আসলে A হবে । যেমন -
i) I saw a man on the street.
ii) He seems to be an Indian.
(iii) He drives the car at 100 miles an hour.
(iv) Rafiq is a university student.
(v) I saw a one-eyed man.
কোন শব্দ Consonant হলেও যদি উচ্চারণ Vowel এর মত হয় তাহলে A না হয়ে An হয় । উপরের উদাহরণ পাঁচটি ভালোভাবে লক্ষ্য করুন । (iii) নম্বর উদাহরণে Consonant(H) থাকা সত্ত্বেও An ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে । কারণ এখানে H এর উচ্চারণ (H-হ) না হয়ে (অ-O)উচ্চারিত হয়েছে । তাই এখানে An ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে । আবার(iv) নম্বর উদাহরণে Vowel(U) থাকা সত্ত্বেও A ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে । কারণ কোন Vowel যদি (ইউ) বা (ওয়া) এর মত উচ্চারিত হয় তাহলে তার পূর্বে An না বসে A বসবে । যে শব্দটির সামনে Article বসবে সেই শব্দটির উচ্চারণের উপর ভিত্তি করে A/An বসাতে হবে । যেমন- (iv)নম্বর উদাহরণে University শব্দটির উচ্চারণের উপর ভিত্তি করে A বসেছে কিন্তু Article টি Student এর জন্য বসেছে ।

A এবং An কখনো Plural countable noun এর সাথে বসতে পারে না । এরা কেবল Singular countable noun এর সাথে বসতে পারে । যেমন -
(i) A bird is flying in the sky.
(ii) The birds are flying in the sky.

কোন অপরিচিত ব্যক্তির নামের পূর্বে A বসে । যেমন-
(i) A Mr. Rahim has been arrested. (মি. রহিম নামের একজন ব্যক্তি গ্রেপ্তার হয়েছে ।)

A এবং An কখনো Uncountable noun এর সাথে বসতে পারে না । যেমন-
(i) Water of this lake is pure.

একক ইউনিট বোঝাতে A/An ব্যবহৃত হয় । যেমন-
i) An ounce is enough.

Few, Little, Lot of, Good deal ইত্যাদির পূর্বে এবং Many এর পরে A/An বসে । যেমন-
(i) He made a few mistakes.

সমজাতীয় কিছু বোঝাতে A/An ব্যবহৃত হয় । যেমন-
(i) Birds of a feather flock together.

কতকগুলি Phrase এর পূর্বে A/An বসে । যেমন-
(i) His fame is at a low ebb now.

ঐ রকম একজন বোঝাতে A/An বসে । যেমন-
He thinks he is a Shakespeare.

পেশা, ব্যবসা, শ্রেণী ইত্যাদি বোঝাতে A/An বসে । যেমন:
(i) He is a doctor.

Superlative most যখন তুলনা না বুঝিয়ে ‘খুব বেশি’ বা ‘Very’ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন The এর পরিবর্তে A বসে । যেমন-
(i) This is a most interesting story.

Each বা Per(প্রতি) অর্থে A/An বসে । যেমন-
(i) He earns two thousand taka a month.

Exclamatory sentence যদি what দিয়ে শুরু হয় তাহলে A/An বসে। যেমন-
(i) What a nice mobile it is !

Million, Thousand, Hundred, Dozen ইত্যাদির পূর্বে A বসে। যেমন-
(i) There are a thousand people.

Many এর পরে Singular common noun থাকলে A/An বসে। যেমন-
i) Many a man was present.

ব্যক্তি বোঝাতে ভাষার পূর্বে A/An বসে। যেমন :
(i) He is an English.
